Themes, Tags, and Concepts

Vocabulary:

  • Corpus – a collection of written texts, especially the entire works of a particular author or a body of writing on a particular subject.
  • Domain – a specific field of study, subject, or topic area, such as finance, medicine, or law. Recognizing the domain of a text is critical because the meaning of words, concepts, and linguistic patterns can change dramatically depending on the context.
  • Concept List – a collection of words, phrases, and their synonyms that are grouped together to represent a single idea or topic. Instead of just counting individual words, text analysis tools use concept lists to understand the deeper, thematic meaning in a body of text.
  • Concepts – an entity or idea that you want to identify, measure, or extract from text, such as a person’s name, a date, a product, or a more abstract idea like “customer satisfaction”.
  • Associations – relationships between concepts (words or word sequences) that frequently appear together in a text collection. These associations are identified by mining association rules, similar to discovering items often bought together in a market basket analysis, to reveal how ideas and entities are linked within the text. By analyzing concept co-occurrences, researchers can uncover underlying patterns, mental models, and the semantic structure of the text.
  • Conceptual Matches – also known as semantic matching, is a text analysis technique that finds documents and data based on their meaning and context, rather than just exact keywords. This advanced method is a significant improvement over traditional lexical or keyword matching, which can miss relevant information if the search query doesn’t use the same specific terms as the source text.
  • Total Matches – Tags that use concepts as well as the conceptual matches for the exact concept.

Helios will create a “Helios Themes” Concept list, as well as specific deep dive lists for each theme:

Below is the concept list for the theme “Taste and Flavor Experience”

Concept Definitions: OR (expansive)

Concepts with a comma ‘,’ between them include verbatims that include either term and are represented by a filled dot.

The example below includes all verbatims that include ‘good flavor’ or ‘love the flavor’.

Concept Definitions: AND (restrictive)

Concepts with the ‘&’ between them indicate the verbatim as both terms and are represented by a hollow circle.

The example below looks for verbatims that include metallic AND taste.

Concept Definitions: Exclude

These include one concept unless they include the other.

The example below looks for verbatims that include the concept delicious, but excludes them if they also include the word candy.
